Setting an intention you can actually use

An intention is one clear sentence about what you want to move toward. It should be clear enough that you would notice a useful step when it shows up. It is not a line that pretends the ending has already happened, and saying it does not make the ending true. In a guided sitting, the intention is the thing you get clear about before you picture anything.

How is an intention different from a wish?

A wish can be huge and still be sincere. “I want a different life” is sincere. It is also too big to guide the next hour. An intention takes one slice of that wish and says what “different” means this week. A conversation you have been avoiding. A page of work. A walk you keep meaning to take. You should be able to describe the slice to a friend without using the word universe.

Some lines jump straight to “I am already there.” That can feel kind for a moment, and then hollow, because you are not already there. You are in a room, with a day that still has to be lived. An intention stays with the effort: this is what I am turning toward. The practical guide is built around that turn, not around pretending you have already arrived.

What makes a sentence clear enough?

You can tell it is clear when the next action is almost boring. “Be more confident” does not tell you what to do at 4 p.m. “Ask Maya for the draft by Thursday” does. “Feel peaceful” does not. “Sit for fifteen minutes after I close the laptop, before I open anything else” does. Clear is not small-minded. It is kind to the tired person you will be later, who will not want to decode a poem.

A simple plan helps that tired person. “If it is Thursday after lunch, then I send the note.” The cue is something you will actually meet. Psychologists have found that tying a step to a real cue helps people do what they already meant to do, especially when the moment is busy or awkward. That work is not about manifestation. It is about the gap between meaning well and doing the thing. That gap is where a sitting either becomes useful or stays decoration.

What if all you have is a feeling?

Start there. A sitting often begins with what is taking up room: a feeling you cannot shake, a worry, a thought that loops, a tight body, too much noise. Those are not failures. They are the material. Name the feeling in ordinary words. Then ask what it is pointing toward, not what it proves about you. “I am clenched about money” might point toward “I will look at the account on Sunday and write down what is actually due.” The second sentence is an intention. The first was the weather.

Do not force a noble aim if a plain one is truer. Wanting rest is allowed. Wanting to finish a task so you can rest is also allowed. This is not a test of how evolved your desire is. If you want a picture to go with the sentence, the note on picturing it keeps that picture to one scene.

When is an intention too big for one sitting?

When it needs other people to become different, or the past to be rewritten, or a number in an account to change before you have done anything. You can still care about those things. You cannot set them as today’s intention without lying to yourself. Cut until the sentence contains an action that is yours. “I want them to apologize” becomes “I will say the one sentence I have been practicing, and then I will stop.” You do not control the reply. You do control whether you speak.

  • Write one sentence. If it needs the word “always” or “never,” write it again.
  • Add the block that is yours: fear, fog, the habit of opening another tab.
  • Add an if-then: if this happens, then I do this small thing.
  • Stop. One intention per sitting is enough.

Where does the sentence go after you stand up?

Somewhere you will meet the cue. A note on the fridge. A block on the calendar. The top of the document. Not a secret page you will feel guilty for forgetting. The daily habit is only the doorway. The intention is what you carry through it. If the sentence still feels like magic, read what is real, and what is just wishing before you add another layer on top.

Innerealm will ask you what is taking up room, and it will give you a place to answer. It will not grade the sentence. Bring one you can use, or find it in the quiet. Then take the step the sentence was for. That is the whole job of an intention.

If you want the sitting rather than another page, Innerealm is a guided practice: pictures, music, and a calm voice. Read the intro, then begin when you are ready.
